Arc Flash Safety and Prevention

Arc Flash Safety and Prevention

At ATEC, INC. we have developed an industry leading approach to mitigating Arc Flash risk and locating electrical hazards. Our approach is customizable to meet each specific need.

First we start with education.  It is important to understand what an Arc Flash is, how it can occur and what can be done to prevent such a potential catastrophic event. Our engineering department is dedicated to the safety of your personnel and property. We will fully educate you on all aspects of Arc Flash safety.

An “Arc Flash” occurs when an electric current leaves its intended path and leaps through the air from one conductor to another. This flashover can be dangerous if an employee is nearby. Serious injury or death can occur from burns and/or pressure created by an explosion that results from the Arc Flash.

Second we perform a Risk Assessment.

This begins with data collection of all the necessary data needed to perform the Arc Flash Analysis. Our skilled technicians are experienced to obtain and identify any/ all pertinent information needed to insure all the information needed is accurate and secured.

Finally the Engineering study.

We include modeling, analysis drawing, fault current and coordination studies. Our methodology includes the usage of industry leading software. Our engineering department is trained and qualified to deliver an end result that is precise and compliant.

Approach Boundaries

Utilizing our performed engineering analysis information we will produce and install labels per ANSI Z535.4 specifications. We will make recommendations necessary to ensure your employees safety.

Facilities with energized equipment need to set up protection boundaries to prevent arc flash injuries on the premises. Since energized equipment needs to be maintained, it can’t simply be locked in a protective shell. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) developed approach boundaries for this very scenario. These boundaries are as follows:

  • Flash Protection Boundary
  • Limited Approach
  • Restricted Approach.
  • Prohibited Approach
